Frequently ask questions

Should I remove moss from my roof?

It’s a good idea to remove moss from your roof for several reasons:

  • Kerbside Appeal – Moss growth can make your house look unkempt, reducing the appearance of your house, its kerbside appeal and potentially impacting the value of your property.
  • Prevent Damage – Where you have large amounts of moss present, it can trap moisture against the surface of your roof, which in turn can cause damage to your roof.  Certain roof tiles are also more prone to being damage than other, we have noticed when cleaning roofs that clay tiles seems to show signs of deterioration where moss has been on the tile for a long period of time, we have also seen cement tiles were moss has eaten into the tile causing pitting and defacing the tile.
  • Extend The Life Of Your Roof – Keeping your roof free of moss can extend the lifespan of your roof. Persistent dampness can accelerate the wear and tear on your roof materials, which overtime will lead to the degradation of these materials, causing them to break down prematurely.
How do I clean moss from my roof?

We’d advise you to speak with a professional cleaning contractor, like us. We’d visit your property and check the condition of your roof before we advise on the best method to have your roof cleaned.

If your roof is in a sorry state with problems like missing pointing, torn underlay/membrane, loose flashing etc, then pressure washing isn’t the answer – as it’s highly likely it would cause water to penetrate into your home.

If this is the case then we’d recommend manually removing the moss and applying a biocide treatment to kill any remaining moss, which will be a lot gentler on your roof, a lot less messy, and with no risk of water damage within your home.

How long will the moss stay away for?

The manufacturer of the biocide treatment we use gives a guide of 3-4 years before you should notice any signs of regrowth.

To prevent moss reappearing on your roof, we recommend a maintenance application of biocide treatment every 2-3 years which will keep your roof looking clean and moss free for many years to come.

Depending on weather conditions, your roof type and any surrounding foliage can drastically lower the time that algae and moss remains gone, so the timing of your maintenance applications might need to be adjusted.

What will my roof look like after it has been cleaned?

This does depend on the condition and material of your roof tiles. If your tiles are relatively new then they will return to their original colour.

If your tiles are older, then there is a high likelihood that the colour coating will have deteriorated over time, and they will end up being a light concrete grey or yellow colour. Our expert team will be able to advise on the expected colour before the clean.

Is pressure washing bad for roof tiles?

We get asked all the time “is safe to pressure wash my roof” or “will pressure washing my roof damage the tiles”.

We use a high heat and lower pressure washing technique to carry out the clean of your roof, and we keep all the outlets oscillating – so there is never any direct pressure.

We also carry out the cleaning from our scaffold tower, so we can ensure there are no broken tiles from the cleaning process.

What areas do you cover for roof cleaning?
